Traditional Use

Though the Yellow zeodary is native to India and Indonesia, it is also found in the flat southern terrai forests of Nepal. It was introduced to Europe by Arabs around the sixth century, but its use as a spice in the West today is extremely rare.Yellow zeodary is a rhizome, also known as Kasturi manjal in Nepali and grows in tropical and subtropical wet forest of Nepal. It is also called Wild Turmeric. The fragrant plant bears yellow flowers with red and green bracts and the underground stem section is large and tuberous with numerous branches. The leaf shoots of the plant are long and can reach 1 metre (3 feet) in height.According to Ayurveda the drug is used in various kinds of diseases related to skin, cardiovascular and respiratory system. Yellow zeodary is used in cosmetic formulations and traditional medicinal applications as an anti-inflammatory agent, to promote blood circulation, to enhance complexion, to remove blood stasis and also for the treatment of cancer. Rhizomes are used in combination with astringents and aromatics for bruises, sprain, hiccough, bronchitis, cough, leucoderma and skin eruptions. Yellow zeodary rhizomes are also used in snake poison. The paste of CA rhizomes is commonly used as a domestic remedy in headacheYellow zeodary oil is obtained from the rhizomes of Curcuma aromatica through steam distillation.
