Traditional Use

The traditional healers identify the true Timbur with help of its bark and roots.The Himalayan healers of use it mainly in treatment of respiratory diseases. It is considered as good appetizer. Its regular use improves the voice quality.The use of bark, fruits and seeds are considered to be carminative, stomachic and anthelmintic.Z. alatum, a species growing in the Himalayas and figuring prominent in Tibetan and Nepali cooking, is reported to contain mostly linalool (more than 50%), further limonene, methyl cinnamate and cineol. Due to the anaesthetic power of its alkamide constituents, the plant is effective in suppressing toothache temporarily if unripe fruits or the wood of young branches are chewed.The bark and fruits are acrid, bitter, aromatic, deodorant, antiseptic, stimulant, digestive, carminative, stomachic, anthelmintic, liver tonic, diuretic, constipating, sudorific, febrifuge, depurative and tonic. They are useful in vitiated conditions of kapha and vata, turnours odontalagia, cephalalgia, otopathy, ophthalmopathy, dyspepsia, colic, flatulence, helminthiasis, diarrhoea, hepatopathy, splenopathy, strangury, fever, leucoderma leprosy, skin diseases, cough, asthma, paralysis, gout, convulsions, diabetes, wounds ulcers, stomatopathy, pharyngopathy, cardiac debility and general debilityThis plant is a shrub or a small tree, 6 meter tall or more, with dense foliage, found in the hot valleys of the Himalayas at altitudes of 1,000 t0 2100 m. The dried fruits collected from the wild or cultivated fields, are dried before steam distillation, yielding an essential oil (c. 22.3%).Zanthoxylum is obtained through the steam distillation of dried fruits and leaves of Zanthoxylum armatum DC.
